With snow on the ground and the temperatures below freezing it’s hard to believe that spring is just a few weeks away. Springtime in college admissions is busy! Admissions representatives are hosting admitted students on campus as well as gearing up for open houses, campus tours, and information sessions for high school sophomores and juniors.

Spring means travel season for Independent College Counselors as well. I have already booked my flights and hotels to visit more than 20 colleges this spring. Many of the schools I am visiting for the first time, while others I am returning for an updated look. I usually visit between 25-35 schools a year.

Why do I visit so many college campuses? The answer is simple. There is no better way to understand the campus culture than seeing a college campus in person. Visiting colleges is an important and exciting part of my job as a college counselor. Each school is unique and attracts students who take advantage of their specialized programs. When I visit schools I follow the same advice that I give my students; I attend the information session, take the official campus tour, speak with admissions staff, and check out the nearby town or city as well. And at the end of each visit, I think about what kind of student would be a good fit for the school: academically, socially and financially.

Before visiting campus I suggest you do the following:

  • Research the school Have some basic knowledge about the school before getting to campus. A great place to start is always the college website. Check out the admissions, academics, and student life tabs on the individual website. If your high school has Naviance that can be helpful as well.
  • Have questions prepared to ask during the information session The purpose of the information session is twofold: to learn about the school through the formal presentation and to ask questions that cannot easily be found on the college website.
  • Make a list of things you want to see on campus If you’re interested in science and they didn’t show you the science building and labs during the tour, then visit them on your own time. If you like to work out and you didn’t see the gym visit it before you leave.
  • Make an appointment with a coach and/or faculty member If you’re touring campus why not try to coordinate a meeting with a faculty member in your prospective major. If you are considering playing a sport at the competitive college level reach out to the coach. (Always contact faculty or staff through email before your visit to schedule a convenient time.)
  • Allot enough time to explore the college town or city Build into your itinerary time to walk or drive around town to find the nearest grocery store, CVS, local coffee shop, etc. It’s important to see what’s around the college or university since it may be your home for the next several years.
