I was thrilled to finally visit The Ohio State University, especially since it has grown in popularity over the last few years here in the NJ/NY area. There’s no shortage of school pride and spirit here! For many, The Ohio State University is synonymous with football. On game day the on-campus stadium is packed with students, alumni, and devoted fans cheering on the Buckeyes. But, beyond the tailgate parties, painted faces, and marching band, The Ohio State University boasts state-of the-art facilities and outstanding academic programs across the board.

With a retention rate of 94% there’s no question that most of the undergraduates who choose OSU love this HUGE University. OSU boasts 50,000 undergraduates, 37 residence halls, and 25 eating locations on campus. The Oval (yes the oval and not the quad) is the large grassy gathering place at the center of campus, while the student recreation center (RPAC) boasts being the largest among US colleges. RPAC is a very busy place all hours of the day with multiple floors dedicated to cardio equipment. There are weight rooms, exercise classrooms, and racquetball courts as well. My campus tour took nearly two hours weaving through the multiple “quad-like” areas and top-notch facilities. However, our tour guide told us that students are able to walk from one end of campus to the other in just 15 minutes.

OSU students have over 200 majors to choose from ranging from the traditional arts and sciences to pre-professional majors such as engineering, business and nursing. The pre-professional concentrations tend to be the most competitive areas of study.

I had the opportunity to take a private tour of the Fisher College of Business. Fisher is a six-building complex that has the feel of a campus within a campus. Among its 12 majors the most popular majors are finance, accounting and marketing. Students can apply at the end of their sophomore year to the honors cohort program. 98-percent of all business students have at least one internship. Fisher has two business career fairs per year for internships and post graduation jobs.

Did you know that Columbus is the 14th largest city in the United States? This certainly surprised me. Columbus is home to many corporate headquarters. Wendy’s, Nationwide, and Express are just a few of the big name corporations that regularly hire OSU interns and recent graduates to work in their Columbus offices.

Lots of club and activities are available on campus. Performing arts groups are popular as well as intramural and club sports. Greek life has a small but mighty presence. Only 10-percent of Buckeyes join sororities and fraternities. Students can rush second semester freshman year. Off campus, the Theatre and Arena districts are popular among students who want to see off-Broadway productions and professional sports. Just steps off campus students can find lots of dining and shopping options on High Street and 11th Avenue. No need to have a car on campus since the city bus system can take students downtown and local malls for free with their Buckeye card.

Admissions and Merit Aid

Although admissions reviews applications holistically, test scores are looked at very closely during the process. The middle range ACT scores were 28-32 and SAT scores were 1310-1430 for the class of 2021. Nursing is direct entry with just 150 spots for freshmen. Students in the top quarter of the incoming class are historically eligible for the National Buckeye Scholarship. More selective merit scholarships are awarded to both in-state and out-of-state students as well.
