Just a few weeks ago, before the “stay-at-home” policy was implemented, I visited Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut for a college counselor special event. My last visit to SHU was seven years ago, so I was excited to visit campus again to see and hear firsthand what is happening on campus. Wow, there are lots of new buildings and academic programs since my last campus visit.

First here are a few facts. Sacred Heart University is a mid-size school with 5,000 undergraduate students located in the suburban town of Fairfield. Founded in 1963, SHU began as a commuter college but has been a residential campus since 1994. It’s the second largest Catholic school in New England.

The Jack Welch College of Business and Technology continues to grow and diversify. It has launched several new programs in the growing fields of hospitality, cyber security, and business analytics. Internship opportunities through partnerships are abundant in nearby New Haven, Hartford, and New York.

I was exited to learn more about the relatively new engineering program at SHU. This three years old program is housed in a newly renovated former GE building, which is just a short shuttle ride from the main campus. The A.I. and I.D.E.A. labs are equipped with the newest technology. Students who study engineering have the opportunity to begin internships as early as freshman year.

The Center for Healthcare Education opened in 2017, and I had the good fortune to tour this impressive facility. A simulated hospital floor occupies the top level of the center, which is equipped with state of the art labs for not only nurses but OTs and PTs as well. Admissions into all healthcare programs are limited and extremely competitive. SHU enrolls 200 nursing students each year and boasts a 100-percent pass rate on the nursing boards.

I had the chance to talk with Sean Heffron who is the Director of Academic Success at the Jandrisevits Learning Center. SHU currently does not have a fee based comprehensive learning support program, however, there are plans to put one in place. In the meantime, there are many study skills and note-taking workshops as well as one-on-one tutoring and advising for those students who need assistance. There is also programing such as Ahead Term and Academic Success Planning that assists freshmen who find the academic transition difficult or receive low grades.

Career advising begins freshman year and is robust. Each student is offered one-on-one career advising and works with a staff member to develop a personalized plan throughout their time at SHU. There are eight career fairs on campus. Students have access to the Handshake Network and can take part in employer partnerships. SHU has a 98-percent placement rate within six months of graduation.

The majority of students who enroll at SHU hail from New England, New Jersey, and New York. Students here are active participants in many on campus activities and  services on and off campus. Thirty percent of all students join Greek life. SHU athletes compete in division I athletics and attending athletic events is popular. A gorgeous new hockey arena is currently being built on South Campus and promises to be a tremendous asset to not only the hockey program, but also the entire SHU community. Students wanting to get involved in the performing arts have plenty of options. Students who join musical ensembles including the marching band are eligible for a $1,000/year scholarship

Housing and Dining

Several beautiful new dorms have been built in the last year and more are nearing completion. Within the next two years the university plans to open more new housing options with a new dining hall in the upper quad that will have 900-1,000 beds. All students who request on-campus housing will be accommodated. There are a lot of dining options including an on-campus diner.

Admissions and Financial Aid

SHU offers early action, early decision, and regular decision deadlines. Students applying ED must interview whether it be in person on campus, off campus with a regional rep or through SKYPE. SHU is test optional for all students including those wanting to study nursing. However, nursing students are required to submit SAT or ACT scores. SHU is looking to grow internationally. Although admissions is need blind, SHU is unable to meet full demonstrated need. To be considered for merit aid, students need not submit standardized testing.
