Top academics, easy access to downtown Boston, big division I athletics, and a deep community bond are just a few reasons college bound high school students put Boston College on the top of their wish lists. After visiting this gorgeous gated campus again last summer I certainly see why this medium sized Jesuit school receives top marks.

I attended the packed information session where Associate Director of Admissions Mary French and a panel of students delivered a detailed overview of campus life and the admissions process. BC is one of 28 Jesuit colleges in the country. The Jesuit mission is to educate the whole person and its teachings are committed to a liberal arts education. At BC, service is part of the curriculum and service placement with reflection is required of all students. While nearly 70-percent of all students identify as Catholic, students told us that all faiths are welcome and there are active Jewish and Muslim groups on campus.

Boston College has nearly 10,000 undergraduate students studying in one of the four undergraduate schools: Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, Carroll School of Management, Lynch School of Education and Connell School of Nursing. BC is located in the suburban town of Chestnut Hill Massachusetts, just a few miles from downtown Boston. Students must apply to one of the four schools within the college. Although the most popular major is undecided within the school of arts and sciences, students considering business, education, or nursing, should apply directly into those schools since there is little chance of transferring into them later. Fun facts: economics is the most popular major on campus and all business students must take an ethics course.

Hands-on learning is encouraged and popular at Boston College. One third of all students participate in research at this tier one research school. Nearly ninety-percent of all students hold an internship with many students scheduling classes Monday through Thursday leaving Fridays opened for internships. Over half of all students study abroad.

There was lots of building happening when I visited campus. The Schiller Institute, a new integrated multi-disciplinary collaborative research center is being built.  The institute will house computer science and applied sciences. There is lots of buzz about a possible engineering program coming to BC in the future. Time will tell.

Our tour guide, a rising junior from Massachusetts, told us that there’s plenty to do “on the heights” and there’s no need for a car since the Green Line T stop is just steps away from campus. If you’re into dance there’s a dance group for you. Students who like theater can audition for productions, even if you’re not a theater major. Service immersion trips are popular and students who participate follow up their experience with a local service project once they return to campus. The marching and pep bands attract lots of musicians. Tryouts are required. Watching BC football, basketball, and hockey is nearly a requirement and school spirit is over the top here. The football stadium is right on campus and you can hear roars from crowds on game day.

Most BC students live on campus. While 60-percent of freshmen live on the main campus, nearly 40-percent of all freshmen live on the Newton Campus which has its own recreation center, library and dining hall; shuttles take students from the Newton Campus to the main campus throughout the day. Most seniors choose to live on campus.

Admissions

BC is highly selective in their admissions process. Students have the choice between applying Early Action or Regular Decision. A word of caution, only apply EA if you believe your application is at its strongest state. If you are planning on taking the SAT in October consider applying RD since the scores may not be reviewed during the EA. Please note: students do not have the ability to select a second choice school at Boston College during the application process.

 Financial Aid

B.C. is need blind and meets full demonstrated need. Students must submit the FAFSA and CSS profile to be considered for need-based aid. There are few merit scholarships available. Students interested in being considered for the Gabelli Presidential Scholarship must apply EA. This scholarship is a full tuition award and is limited to 15 recipients.
