If you’re a college student, final exams will soon be in your rearview mirror and you’ll be home for the holidays and winter break. There’s no question that you deserve to take time to relax with friends and family, catch up on sleep, and enjoy some home cooking the first week or two. However, once the holidays are over, there’s ample time to be proactive and productive. Here are a few things to add to your winter break to-do-list.

  • Write or update your resume Whether you’re a freshman, upperclassman or second semester senior, you’re going to need a well-crafted resume when searching for a summer job, internship, or first job. Visit your college career services website for tips to get started. Often there are sample templates appropriate to your major or experiences.
  • Network It’s never too early to talk to people already in the work force. Networking usually starts as a casual conversation with friends and family. Ask them about their careers and jobs (past and present) and tell them about your possible career interests.
  • Shadow Observing people on the job for a day or week is a terrific way to see firsthand what various careers or specific jobs are like in real life.
  • Apply for summer jobsMany employers are already planning for summer help. Whether you’re looking to return to a lifeguard or camp counselor position or plan to seek out a new opportunity now is the time to reach out to employers.
  • Apply for summer internships Check out the career services office at your college for internship postings. Some colleges have internship fairs at the beginning of second semester.
  • Seek out research opportunities Most colleges and universities have summer research positions on campus with professors. Now is the time to contact professors in your field of interest to learn about research opportunities on campus. Also, consider applying to research opportunities at other universities and hospitals in your area of interest.
  • Investigate summer study abroad options It is often difficult for students studying engineering, science, or nursing to study abroad during the fall or spring semesters due to the prescribed course requirements. Summer is a good time to have a study away experience, while staying on track to graduate “on time.” Research summer away experiences now through both your college study abroad office and other institutions’ websites.
