The UT Austin campus was without a doubt the most popular college tour during the IECA Conference in Austin last spring. I was especially excited to visit the campus since it has become a top choice university among many of my students over the last three years. Beginning with the gorgeous fountain and central walk, I immediately understood the grand appeal. The campus is very insular and extends over 40 acres of rolling hills. Although the university is located in the city of Austin, the campus has an intimate feel for a school with over 40,000 undergraduates. With a 95-percent retention rate between freshman and sophomore years it is clear that students love it here.

Academics are tops and the standout majors are business, computer science, and engineering. All students must complete a core curriculum and freshmen are required to take a First Year Seminar Signature Course. Experiential learning opportunities are plentiful. Research is big at this top tier school. Over 75-percent of students participate in research on-campus opportunities. Engineering students can enroll in the co-op program and students in all majors are encouraged to hold at least one internship during their time at UT Austin. Studying abroad is popular as well with nearly 50-percent of all students having at least one study abroad experience. At lease one-half of the abroad experiences are faculty led.

Our tour guide was a first generation student from Texas, and she told us that UT Austin does a great job of trying to make a large school smaller with its small learning communities on campus. Every freshman is part of a learning community cohort regardless whether he or she lives on campus. Our tour guide told us that this helped her feel connected to her classmates.

There are 10 resident halls and nearly 70-percent of all freshmen live on campus. Housing is not guaranteed. It is highly encouraged that students who wish to live on campus apply for housing before they are accepted since housing is limited for all students. Lots of apartment buildings and bungalows are an easy walk to campus.

From academic, social clubs as well as athletics of all kinds, there is no time to be bored here. Greek life has a small presence with just 12-percent of all students joining fraternities and sororities. Rush begins in late August before freshman year. Sorority and fraternity houses are just off campus.

Not surprising, UT athletics is very popular and UT fans have loads of pride and spirit. Athletes compete in the Division I Big 12 Conference. Saturday Longhorn football games are packed with students, alumni, and locals. Basketball and baseball are also popular spectator sports. If you wish to play sports on a less competitive level, intramural sports are very popular here as well.

The capital city of Austin is vibrant and young. It is also very progressive with more liberal politics than the rest of this generally conservative state. People who live here love to be physically active. Bike lanes and running paths are plentiful. It is definitely an oasis for foodies and those who love live music with lots of clubs and coffee houses. Off-campus nightlife can be found on Sixth Street.

UT Honors Program

The UT Honors Program is one of the oldest and most competitive in the country. Students must apply for the honors program and an invitation only interview is required for competitive candidates. Students reap the benefits of small seminar classes.

Admissions

State law mandates that 90-percent of the student body must be Texas residents. Students can apply two ways with either the Coalition Application or the Texas Application. Students apply to a major within the 12 undergraduate schools. Please note, transferring between schools is very difficult. December 1 is the deadline to be considered for merit aid.
